Drinking tea is not only a pleasant activity, but it is also an integral part of Vietnamese culture. In the early morning of Tết or after dinner on Tet’s eve, all family members gather to sip tea, eat dried candied fruits and converse. Giving calligraphy to friends and family is a traditional custom in Vietnam. During the spring, Vietnamese people in certain cities around the country love to wear “Ao Dais” and walk around the “calligraphy writer’s” (Ong Do) Streets to ask the artisans to write letters and create small posters to give to other people. Every piece of artistic writing not only delivers the best wishes for a prosperous and happy New Year, but also displays the writer’s soul, talent and wisdom.

On the first few days of the Tet holidays, Vietnamese Buddhists go to a temple or pagoda to pray and to do the casting of lots or cleromancy; revealing the will of supernatural entities to direct their lives in the new year. Actually, predicting the future is based on an ancient belief in the Yin and the Yang. As part of this tradition, Vietnamese people draw lots at the beginning of the year in order to better understand one’s self and to learn from the past while enhancing the possibility of a better and more successful future.
