DISCOVERING MUI NE

Today, Mui Ne is known as a favourite destination for tourists from around the world, captivating visitors with its natural beauty, scenic beaches, sand dunes and the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region.

However, not many people know that the origin of the name Mui Ne is historically linked to a bay and small harbour that has long served as a shelter for boats seeking refuge from storms. ‘Mui’ means ‘nose’ in Vietnamese, but it is also the word for ‘cape’ because a cape is like a nose to the land. The name is not only used to describe the local cape, which is a high rocky promontory by the sea, but is also used to describe the harbour, as ‘Ne” means to shelter, hide or avoid in Vietnamese.

Currently the name is used for the entire coastal area in and around Mui Ne ward, Phan Thiet City.
